Energy demand grew 6% in april driven by manufacturing

Colombia's electricity demand rose 6.07% in April 2026 compared to the same month last year, reaching 7,217.2 gigawatt-hours, according to data from XM.

Market operator XM reported that the increase was driven mainly by manufacturing industries, which demanded 843.4 gigawatt-hours, up 37.9% from April 2025. Mining and quarrying also contributed with 747.3 gigawatt-hours, a 33.6% year-on-year rise.

By region, Chocó recorded the highest growth at 10.59%. It was followed by Tolima, Huila and Caquetá with 7.64%, and Oriente with 7.39%. The Caribbean led total consumption with 2,094.26 gigawatt-hours, followed by the Center with 1,714.55 gigawatt-hours.

Residential and small business consumption grew 5.46%, while industry and commerce rose 9%. Weekdays accounted for the highest demand at 4,985.9 gigawatt-hours.
