Whitmer endorses Stevens in Michigan Senate primary

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate on Friday. The move backs Stevens over rival Abdul El-Sayed ahead of the Aug. 4 vote.

Whitmer said in a video posted to Stevens’ account that her strategy as governor is to get things done. “That’s why I’m endorsing Haley Stevens for the U.S. Senate,” she stated.

Stevens responded on social media that she was thrilled by the support. She described Whitmer as a champion for Michigan who understands the stakes of the race.

The primary will determine the Democratic nominee to replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters. Stevens faces El-Sayed, who has support from progressives including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. The winner will face Republican Mike Rogers in November.

Whitmer also accused Republicans of raising costs through tariffs and Medicaid cuts while praising Stevens’ focus on manufacturing and prescription drug prices.
