Union members at Microsoft Xbox held a press conference on June 29 to oppose expected mass layoffs. They argued the company has the resources to avoid cuts and called for stronger protections across all studios.
The Communications Workers of America organized the event with representatives from multiple Xbox unions. Speakers highlighted recent console price increases and executive compensation as evidence that layoffs are unnecessary.
Frank Arce, vice president for CWA District 9, stated that Microsoft workers “will not be treated as disposable.” Other participants cited Satya Nadella’s $96.5 million salary and billions spent on artificial intelligence.
Mahreen Fatima, a senior environment artist on Diablo 4, questioned the company’s financial claims. Andrew Snell, a QA tester at Activision Publishing, said the unions are uniting to demand advance notice, two years of recall rights, and hiring freezes for all employees.
No layoffs have been confirmed. The company is expected to begin a restructuring with personnel cuts after its fiscal year ends on June 30.
