Laura Pereira Camargo, 12, died on Sunday (April 19) after her hair was sucked into a pool drain in Mirassol, inland São Paulo, on Friday (April 17). She remained submerged for about five minutes and was hospitalized with severe complications. The case was registered as an accidental death.
Laura Pereira Camargo was playing in a friend's pool in Mirassol on Friday, April 17, when her hair became caught in the drain's suction system. According to the police report, the 12-year-old girl, who would have turned 13 in September, remained submerged for 5 to 10 minutes before being rescued.
She was attended by the Fire Department and taken to Mirassol's Urgent Care Unit (UPA), arriving in cardiorespiratory arrest. After resuscitation, she was transferred to the Hospital da Criança e Maternidade (HCM) in São José do Rio Preto, where she developed multiple organ dysfunction, bacterial pneumonia, and septic shock of pulmonary focus. Death occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, as certified by doctor Monique Scatolin Pinatti.
The police report, filed at 11:57 p.m. Sunday, classifies the case as 'non-criminal – suspected death, accidental death.' Laura's father is a deacon at the Congregação Cristã no Brasil in Mirassol, and the religious community mourned the loss on social media.
The wake is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, at 7 a.m. at Centro Educacional Arca de Noé, with burial at 11 a.m. at Mirassol's municipal cemetery.
