Baerbock hopes for Christmas in home village near Hannover

Annalena Baerbock, president of the UN General Assembly, longs for the holidays in her home village south of Hannover. Despite extended negotiations on the UN budget, she wants to be with her family. The politician emphasizes the importance of traditions like real candles on the Christmas tree.

Annalena Baerbock, the former German foreign minister and current president of the UN General Assembly, expressed in an interview with Funke Mediengruppe newspapers her desire to spend Christmas not in New York, but in Germany. The 44-year-old is currently based in New York, where the holiday season attracts many tourists. Still, she prioritizes time with her family: "We still have to set the UN budget for next year here, and given the current global situation, it's particularly difficult, so the negotiations have just been extended." She hopes her two daughters won't travel without her.

Baerbock grew up in a village belonging to Pattensen south of Hannover. Traditions like Christmas with her large, lively family and real candles on the Christmas tree are sacred to her. In November 2024, she and her husband Daniel Holefleisch confirmed their separation. On questions about a possible new partnership, she replied: "I generally don't give updates on my private life. But without the constant travel and permanent public scrutiny as foreign minister, I finally have more normal time for my greatest love: my two daughters."

Her term as president of the UN General Assembly ends in September 2026. Recently, she posted two Instagram videos in the style of American TV series to appeal to younger audiences and highlight the UN motto "Better together, we are stronger together." "I am definitely Generation 'Sex and the City,'" she said, adding: "But unfortunately, I still don't have time to watch series." These formats represent only two of more than 50 videos.
