Beijing criticizes US defense act for overstating China threat

Beijing has accused the United States of exaggerating the so-called "China threat" via its new defense policy act, urging Washington to adopt a rational view of bilateral ties and avoid enforcing negative provisions. The foreign ministry stated that the act interferes in China's internal affairs and undermines its sovereignty, security, and development interests.

Beijing on Friday (December 19, 2025) accused Washington of hyping the so-called "China threat" and interfering in its internal affairs through the newly passed National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA). Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said the act "exaggerates the ‘China threat’, interferes in China’s internal affairs and undermines China’s sovereignty, security and development interests".

"China expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to this," Guo said, adding that Beijing had repeatedly lodged solemn representations with the US side.

The ministry also urged Washington to view China-US relations "rationally" and refrain from enforcing negative China-related provisions. The Taiwan Affairs Office slammed the act for sending "misguided signals" to separatists.

This response highlights ongoing tensions in US-China defense and diplomatic relations. The NDAA represents the latest manifestation of US policy toward China, with Beijing stressing the need for dialogue to maintain bilateral stability.
