Diamondbacks activate Max Kepler after suspension

The Arizona Diamondbacks have activated outfielder Max Kepler from the restricted list after he completed an 80-game suspension. The move came ahead of Thursday’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Kepler agreed to a one-year contract with Arizona on June 9. He had been suspended by Major League Baseball on January 9 following a positive test for epitrenbolone.

To clear roster space, the team optioned infielder Tim Tawa to Triple-A Reno and placed pitcher Ryne Nelson on the 60-day injured list. Pitcher Mitch Bratt was also sent to Reno after his MLB debut, while Juan Burgos was recalled from the minors.

Kepler said he does not know how the substance entered his system and denied any intent to cheat. Manager Torey Lovullo noted that Kepler has served his penalty and is focused on returning to form.

In 10 rehab games, Kepler batted .333 with two home runs. He is expected to play primarily in left field and as designated hitter.
