Now, co-showrunner Hank Steinberg has addressed fallout for two stars. Felicity Huffman's Joan, suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and absent earlier due to stepping down, received end-of-life care after surgery on Amy before injecting herself with medication in a heroic act. 'That's meant to be her swan song, and she's bestowed her last pearls of wisdom onto Amy,' Steinberg said. Still, flashbacks offer a path back: 'Joan is so woven into the fabric of Amy's past.'
Scott Wolf's ethically ambiguous Dr. Richard Miller, who returned mid-season, faces more uncertainty. The team is 'discussing an organic way to bring him back,' per Steinberg.
