Egypt is embedding environmental considerations into its local development framework to boost resource efficiency and sustainable development across governorates, Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad said. She chaired an expanded meeting with senior officials to review key policy areas.

Minister Manal Awad chaired an expanded meeting with senior officials to review key policy files, highlighting what she described as a “qualitative shift” in performance following the integration of environmental responsibilities into local development functions.

The meeting assessed progress in priority areas such as integrated solid waste management, upgrades to sanitation and cleanliness infrastructure, procedures for reconciling building violations, and strengthening environmental inspection systems. Discussions also covered public awareness initiatives and resource efficiency improvements.

Awad called for stronger coordination across ministry sectors to avoid duplication, maximize resource use, and adopt innovative solutions to environmental and development challenges. She urged intensified field monitoring of infrastructure and service projects to ensure compliance with environmental standards, along with expanding best practices in waste management and improving air and water quality.

The minister emphasized building capacities of local administration staff through specialized training programs to enhance institutional performance and promote scientific environmental management approaches. She stressed closer cooperation with governorates to ensure effective implementation and deliver tangible improvements in citizens’ lives, with continuous performance monitoring aligned with Egypt’s balanced development model that links economic growth to environmental protection.
