Enugu Rangers have rejected claims by Super Eagles winger Moses Simon that he was denied a contract due to his ethnic background. The club issued a statement on Friday insisting it has never discriminated on the basis of tribe or ethnicity.
Enugu Rangers issued the statement through General Manager Amobi Ezeaku. It described the club as a national institution that has welcomed players from across Nigeria and beyond for over five decades. Recruitment decisions, the statement said, are based on footballing ability, character and commitment rather than ethnic identity.
Simon, 30, had said in an interview that he trained with Rangers for three months and captained the screening team but was not signed because he was not Igbo. Rangers responded that thousands of players have passed through the club and that not receiving a contract is a common outcome in football.
The club reaffirmed its commitment to equal opportunities and national integration. It ended the statement with its motto, Never Say Die.
