Ethiopian airlines turns to homegrown biofuel to green aviation

Africa's largest carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, is shifting to replace five percent of its fuel with domestically sourced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The initiative, developed with the Ethiopian Minerals Corporation and Sunbird Bioenergy Africa, aims to produce 60 million litres of bioethanol and 40 million litres of SAF annually.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest carrier, is embarking on a significant shift in its fuel supply by aiming to replace five percent of its fuel with domestically sourced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This plan has been developed in partnership with the Ethiopian Minerals Corporation and Sunbird Bioenergy Africa, with the potential to produce 60 million litres of bioethanol and 40 million litres of SAF each year. Industry executives believe this could save Ethiopia up to 100 million dollars in fuel imports.

The initiative marks a bold step toward greening the skies for the airline, which is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable aviation on the continent. By turning to homegrown biofuel, Ethiopian Airlines seeks to reduce reliance on imported fuel and contribute to environmental goals. The development was reported on October 26, 2025, by Bezawit Huluager, a staff writer for Fortune.
