German electric car subsidy mainly benefits Tesla

Germany's new electric car purchase premium has so far mainly benefited Tesla buyers. This is shown in a response from the Federal Environment Ministry to an inquiry by the Greens. 2086 Tesla vehicles have been subsidized to date.

The black-red coalition plans three billion euros in subsidies for electric cars by 2029 to strengthen the German automotive location. New data however shows that German manufacturers have so far benefited little.

Only two German brands appear among the 14 most subsidized. Tesla leads with 2086 subsidized vehicles, followed by Skoda with 1197 and Renault with 784.

Chinese manufacturers such as BYD also receive funds. The subsidies act as a market booster without European legal rules to favor European products.
