German police seek 535 right-wing extremists on arrest warrants

German police are currently searching for 535 right-wing extremists with 714 outstanding arrest warrants. A third of the cases involve violent crimes, and 115 wanted individuals are abroad. Left party politician Clara Bünger calls for giving higher priority to addressing this issue.

According to a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to a minor inquiry by the Left faction in the Bundestag, there are open arrest warrants against hundreds of right-wing extremists. The RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND) reports a total of 714 unexecuted arrest warrants against 535 individuals. Of these, 115 neo-Nazis are abroad, including 20 in Poland and 13 in Austria. 39 of these fugitives to other countries are wanted for violent crimes.

"The number of open arrest warrants against right-wing extremists has been at a worryingly high level for years," Left party interior politician Clara Bünger told RND. Particularly alarming is that a third of the cases involve violent offenses. "The authorities must not continue to watch idly; they need to give this problem priority," she demanded.

In 2024, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution recorded 37,835 right-wing extremist crimes, a 47.4 percent increase from 2023. This included 1,281 violent acts, comprising six attempted murders and 1,121 assaults. Additionally, 24,177 propaganda crimes were logged, up from 15,081 the previous year. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) stated when presenting the annual report in June: "Germany's constitutional order is under attack almost daily".

A study by Bielefeld University on behalf of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung indicates a decline, however: The share of people holding right-wing extremist positions is shrinking, as is support for political violence.
