Holstein Kiel suffered a 1-2 home defeat to bottom-of-the-table SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Saturday. Ending a five-game unbeaten streak, defensive errors proved costly. Coach Marcel Rapp criticized the performance as falling short of the team's standards.
The match at Holstein-Stadion, attended by 11,594 fans, saw Holstein Kiel start dominantly but create few chances. In the first half, the KSV held high possession yet displayed lethargy in attack. Steven Skrzybski narrowly missed with a 16-meter shot (32nd minute).
The second half began disastrously: David Zec let the ball run near the goal line, allowing Aaron Keller to score from an acute angle for Fürth's 1-0 lead (50th). Coach Marcel Rapp responded with substitutions: Adrian Kapralik and Aldin Jakupovic replaced Niklas Niehoff and Jonas Therkelsen (59th). Moments later, Jonas Meffert equalized after Lasse Rosenboom's diagonal pass from the right (60th).
However, Holstein erred again: Umut Tohumcu fouled Aiman Dardari in the box, and Noel Futkeu converted the penalty for 2-1 (77th). Despite late efforts, the equalizer didn't come. Captain Steven Skrzybski called it 'the dumbest defeat of the season.' Jonas Meffert said: 'I'm very disappointed. We wasted a huge chance.' Rapp added: 'We gifted the opponent two goals through stupid actions [...] This performance was clearly too little for our standards.' Guest coach Heiko Vogel remained optimistic: 'I'm not worried about Holstein Kiel. They will stay in the league.'
This loss to the league's bottom team threatens Holstein's distance from relegation. Next up: DFB-Pokal quarterfinal against VfB Stuttgart on Wednesday.
