Hong Kong's first automated public car park partially resumes hourly services

Hong Kong's first automated public car park in Tseung Kwan O has partially resumed hourly parking services after a suspension due to system instability just two days after its opening. The Architectural Services Department said services for larger vehicles restarted at noon on Friday, with private cars to follow soon. The facility debuted on December 29.

Hong Kong's first automated public car park, located on Tong Yin Street in Tseung Kwan O, opened on December 29, 2025, but suspended hourly parking services just two days later on December 31 due to system instability. The suspension did not affect monthly parking services.

In a reply to the South China Morning Post on Friday, the Architectural Services Department stated it was aware of the parking system's instability and had tasked the contractor responsible for its hardware and software with an urgent upgrade. The contractor has assigned additional personnel to support the car park's operator, Value Parking Limited, a separate company.

The department noted that before the launch, relevant authorities and the contractor had tested the automated parking system using various scenarios. "The relevant government authorities are closely coordinating with the contractor in hopes that the services will be resumed totally soon," the department said.

This incident highlights early challenges in deploying automated technology, despite pre-launch testing, as real-world operations revealed issues. The facility, known as the Tseung Kwan O Government Offices Public Car Park, aims to improve public parking efficiency in Hong Kong.
