Indiana's men's basketball team fell 71-51 to Illinois on Sunday at State Farm Center, marking a season-low scoring output for the Hoosiers. Despite entering on a strong run, Indiana struggled with shooting and rebounding against the taller Fighting Illini. The loss highlights the challenges ahead in the Big Ten schedule.
The game took place in Champaign, Illinois, where Illinois hosted Indiana in a Big Ten conference matchup. Indiana, with a record of 17-9 overall and 8-7 in the Big Ten, had won five of their previous six games entering the contest. Illinois improved to 21-5 overall and 12-3 in conference play with the victory.
Indiana managed only 51 points, their lowest total of the season, shooting 40.8% from the field and 25% (6 of 24) from three-point range. They trailed by seven points at halftime but scored just 20 points in the second half. Lamar Wilkerson led Indiana with 21 points, while he and Tucker DeVries combined for 5 of 14 from beyond the arc. The rest of the team went 1 of 10 from distance.
Illinois, the nation's tallest team at an average height of 79.8 inches compared to Indiana's 78 inches, dominated the boards 38-25, including 17 second-chance points to Indiana's five. Both teams struggled from three-point range, combining for 13 of 55 attempts. Indiana coach Darian DeVries noted, "I actually thought we had some really good possessions... Got some pretty clean looks by guys we want taking them and we didn't make them."
On rebounding, DeVries added, "If we were going to stay with them, we were going to have to limit that... I thought as the game wore on, they wore into us a little bit and those opportunities became too many." Illinois coach Brad Underwood praised Indiana postgame, saying, "A team that's very, very good... A team that's an NCAA Tournament team."
The Fighting Illini have won more Big Ten games over the past seven seasons than any other conference team and are ranked No. 8 in the polls. Indiana's next games will test their position in the conference standings.
