At the end of Season 4, Fiona Gallagher, played by Emmy Rossum, secures a job at a diner owned by Charlie, portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Charlie, who overlooks Fiona's recent legal troubles including felony drug possession and child endangerment charges, hints at a potential romantic subplot.
However, when Season 5 begins, Charlie vanishes entirely. Fiona now works under a new boss, Sean, played by Dermot Mulroney, and the diner has been renamed from The Golden House Restaurant to Patsy's Pies. The series offers little explanation, with Sean casually noting he did not hire Fiona but could still dismiss her.

Morgan addressed the fan confusion directly in an Instagram response, later shared on Reddit. He noted that "both projects tried very hard" to accommodate the conflict. Reflecting on his brief role, he added, "It's super weird me just showing up ... with the sweet neck tat and then disappearing. That wasn't the plan."
