Jens Spahn discusses his desire for children

CDU politician Jens Spahn spoke in a TV show about his wish to have children with his husband. Although the wish remains unfulfilled so far, he can still imagine it fundamentally. Spahn and Daniel Funke have been married since 2017.

In the n-tv show 'Pinar Atalay,' Union parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, 45, was asked about his earlier desire for children. The CDU politician, married to his partner Daniel Funke, 44, since 2017, said: 'So far, it hasn't been fulfilled anyway. Now the conditions for us are even a bit more difficult to fulfill it.' Nevertheless, he emphasized: 'Fundamentally, I can still imagine it well, yes.'

As early as 2021, Spahn had stated in an interview with the magazine 'Bunte': 'I think we would be good parents.' The politician has touched on the topic multiple times in the past. In 2020, he spoke in Sandra Maischberger's podcast about his homosexuality. He explained that he does not see being gay as a 'life plan,' as once stated in a CDU resolution. 'Life plan means, I wake up in the morning and somehow have a new idea of my life – I'm gay now,' he said. If he could have chosen back then, he would have 'probably decided differently, if you take it precisely.' He is now totally at peace with it, although there were 'not only easy moments,' 'explaining a few things to the parents and so on and so forth.'

Spahn is currently in the spotlight as Union parliamentary group leader, organizing majorities for Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Earlier controversies, such as Merz's controversial statements on sexual orientation from 2020, in which he drew a line at children, prompted criticism from Spahn. Merz later apologized for it.
