Jordan Walker leads MLB in home runs through 18 games

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker has started the 2026 MLB season strongly, hitting eight home runs in 18 games to lead the league through April 16. The 23-year-old is batting .319 with a .373 on-base percentage, .710 slugging percentage and 1.083 OPS. His performance follows swing adjustments amid an organizational emphasis on urgency.

Cardinals chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom emphasized urgency over passive patience in developing Walker. 'I think about this in terms of urgency,' Bloom said. 'Most really talented players struggle at first or have some sort of struggle early on. But you don't ever want to fall in the trap of thinking we are just going to sit back passively and it's going to come.' Walker debuted in 2023 at age 20 but hit .240/.302/.378 with a .680 OPS over his first three seasons combined, falling short of high expectations for a Cardinals prospect. The Cardinals have missed the playoffs for three straight seasons as they rebuild without shortcuts, Bloom noted. Hitting coach Brant Brown helped Walker refine his swing for efficiency. At 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds, Walker adopted a more upright stance and a slight vertical dip in his hand load to avoid crowding his swing path. 'You saw the talent, and it wasn't producing,' Brown said. 'My job is to increase their talent.' Brown recalled Walker's past issues chasing pitches and adjusted to let his hands work more naturally. 'You can never really give up on talent,' Brown added, 'especially as talented as he is.' Walker's rise tops the 2026 home run leaderboard ahead of Aaron Judge of the Yankees and others like Yordan Alvarez of the Astros.
