The stretch, approximately 1km from Morpus, is cut off and unsafe for vehicles, disrupting traffic between Chapareria and Sebit towards Lodwar. Authorities urge drivers to use alternative routes.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issued a statement on Sunday, March 22, through its Director General Luka Kimeli, warning of traffic disruptions on the Kitale-Morpus Road. The Chapareria-Morpus section has been severed by floods, making travel between Chapareria and Sebit towards Lodwar unsafe for vehicles. The notice stated: “The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that the Chapareria-Morpus section, approximately 1 km from Morpus along the Kitale-Morpus Road, has been cut off, rendering traffic flow between the Chapareria and Sebit sections towards Lodwar unsafe for motorable traffic.” Motorists are advised to remain vigilant and follow directions from police officers and traffic marshals on site. Those travelling from Lodwar are encouraged to use the Marich Pass-Nakuru route as an alternative. KeNHA is working to restore access in the affected area and requests patience from road users. This warning comes amid heavy nationwide rains triggering floods on multiple roads. KeNHA attributed the issues to heavy rainfall in upstream areas and is monitoring the situation. The Kenya Meteorological Department had warned last week of persistent heavy rains until Tuesday, March 24, across regions including Rift Valley and Western Kenya.
