Lando Norris took victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, securing his first win of the 2026 Formula 1 season for McLaren. Oscar Piastri, who led early after passing Norris at the start, retired with a gearbox failure on lap 56. Max Verstappen finished second and Kimi Antonelli third.
Norris started from pole at the Hungaroring but dropped behind Piastri on the opening lap. The McLaren driver closed the gap and showed superior pace, though the team declined his request for pit priority. Piastri lost the lead after contact with lapped Williams driver Carlos Sainz, who received a five-second penalty.
Norris reclaimed the lead during the pit window and pulled away to win by 15 seconds. Piastri retired later in the race. Verstappen recovered from qualifying struggles to take second, while Antonelli held third ahead of the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
The result leaves Antonelli with a 50-point championship lead over Hamilton and 59 points over George Russell heading into the summer break. Norris, fifth in the standings, described his performance as one of his best.
