Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa on the G7 sidelines to address the European Union ban on Brazilian beef exports.
The meeting took place in Évian-les-Bains, France. The ban, announced in early June, takes effect in September because Brazil did not submit required evidence on controls for medications treating animal infections in time.
According to the Brazilian government, the sides agreed to set up a direct channel between Itamaraty and the European Commission to follow the technical negotiations.
Lula committed to seeking solutions for European concerns on sanitary, phytosanitary and steel industry protection matters, while also addressing Brazilian exporters' interests under the Mercosul-European Union agreement.
