Mainz 05 earns point against Hoffenheim

In the Bundesliga, FSV Mainz 05 drew 1-1 with TSG Hoffenheim. Substitute Danny da Costa equalized in the 76th minute after an own goal, while Dominik Kohr set an unwelcome record with his ninth red card. Hoffenheim missed the chance to jump into a Champions League spot.

The Bundesliga match on the 11th matchday ended Friday evening in front of 30,400 spectators in Mainz with a 1:1 (1:0) draw. TSG Hoffenheim, coming off four straight wins, failed to secure victory in goalkeeper Oliver Baumann's 500th Bundesliga appearance. Coach Christian Ilzer dropped points for the first time, missing the leap to a Champions League position.

After an own goal by Andreas Hanche Olsen (9th minute), who unluckily headed a cross from 14 meters into his own net, a Hoffenheim win seemed likely. Mainz, playing harmlessly and inaccurately in minus three degrees Celsius, only mounted a late response. Benedict Hollerbach missed a clear chance (10th minute), while Fisnik Asllani tested Robin Zentner with a low shot (15th minute). There were boos from the stands at halftime.

In the second half, Mainz became more purposeful: Philipp Mwene shot just over (58th minute), Paul Nebel headed high (66th minute). Hoffenheim waited for counters but executed them sloppily; Tim Lemperle squandered a big opportunity (68th minute). Substitute Danny da Costa then equalized from a corner scramble (76th minute), beating Baumann on his milestone night.

In the 88th minute, Dominik Kohr received a red card for a rough foul on Max Moerstedt—confirmed by VAR from referee Sascha Stegemann. It was Kohr's ninth Bundesliga dismissal, a record surpassing Jens Nowotny and Luiz Gustavo. Captain Nadiem Amiri remarked: "Clearly a red card. That moment from Dome wasn't smart from him."

Mainz remains on a relegation spot with six points, winless for over two months and seven games—their last home win came last season. At Hoffenheim, off-field turmoil persists: Executives Markus Schütz and Frank Briel left amid the agent Roger Wittmann scandal, president Jörg Albrecht resigned for health reasons, and sporting director Andreas Schicker is reportedly heading to Wolfsburg. Coach Bo Henriksen had called the match a "small restart."
