The New York Mets dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday following a seven-game losing streak that left the team at 34-48. Andy Green was named interim manager for the remainder of the season. The club plans to conduct a full search for a permanent replacement after the year ends.
Mendoza's departure came after the Mets suffered a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, extending their skid. The team holds the fifth-worst record in baseball.
Albert Pujols expressed interest in the position during an MLB Network appearance. "I'd love to get the opportunity," he said. Pujols noted the club's ownership commitment to winning and its roster talent despite injuries this season.
Other candidates under consideration include Carlos Beltrán, Rocco Baldelli, Alex Cora, Omar López and David Ross. Beltrán currently serves as a special assistant in the Mets front office. Green will return to his role overseeing the farm system once the season concludes.
