Muskoka elementary schools hold annual Nordic ski races

Over 400 participants gathered at Arrowhead Provincial Park for the annual Nordic ski races involving Muskoka's elementary schools on February 26. ANSC secretary Cathie Raynor noted, “The elementary school races are a good way to do that. Some kids are trying racing for the first time, and there are some that may be trying skiing for the first time! While it is a race, we’ve always tried to promote participation and fun.”

Club members volunteered extensively, handling timing, a hot chocolate station, activity monitoring, and course safety. Volunteers positioned along the trail ensured oversight, with a lead adult skier monitoring and sweeping the course.

Michele Schwemmer, the club's volunteer coordinator, instructor, and private lessons coordinator, helped organize the event. She expressed satisfaction with the outcome and the enthusiasm of the young skiers. The races were freestyle, allowing choices between classic skiing and the faster skate style. Schwemmer said, “They don’t have to skate, but this is the race they usually want to skate. It’s the faster style, so they get to have fun with that.”

The day proceeded without issues, emphasizing enjoyment for all involved.
