Over 400 participants gathered at Arrowhead Provincial Park for the annual Nordic ski races involving Muskoka's elementary schools on February 26. The event, organized by the Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club, featured 386 registered young skiers competing in a freestyle format. Volunteers ensured a smooth and fun day focused on participation.
The annual Nordic ski races for Muskoka's elementary schools took place at Arrowhead Provincial Park on February 26, drawing over 400 skiers, supporters, educators, organizers, and volunteers despite a chilly breeze. Nearly every local school and skill level was represented, with parents cheering as children raced in groups divided by age or grade, starting in 20-second intervals.
Organized by the Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club, the event has run for nearly three decades. It began with about 60 participants across two locations—one at Arrowhead and another on the Tawingo property. This year saw 386 registered skiers, aligning with recent averages. The club's mandate includes promoting cross-country skiing in the community, and these races serve that goal by encouraging first-time participants.
ANSC secretary Cathie Raynor noted, “The elementary school races are a good way to do that. Some kids are trying racing for the first time, and there are some that may be trying skiing for the first time! While it is a race, we’ve always tried to promote participation and fun.”
Club members volunteered extensively, handling timing, a hot chocolate station, activity monitoring, and course safety. Volunteers positioned along the trail ensured oversight, with a lead adult skier monitoring and sweeping the course.
Michele Schwemmer, the club's volunteer coordinator, instructor, and private lessons coordinator, helped organize the event. She expressed satisfaction with the outcome and the enthusiasm of the young skiers. The races were freestyle, allowing choices between classic skiing and the faster skate style. Schwemmer said, “They don’t have to skate, but this is the race they usually want to skate. It’s the faster style, so they get to have fun with that.”
The day proceeded without issues, emphasizing enjoyment for all involved.
