The Nuclear Safety Council issued a favorable report on Thursday for extending the Almaraz nuclear plant until June 2030. The final decision now rests with the government. Owners Iberdrola, Endesa and Naturgy requested the extension.
The CSN plenary met on Thursday and backed the request with conditions. The report rests on verification of the plant's correct operation and maintenance of adequate safety levels, based on 29 documents from 16 specialized areas.
Conditions include keeping necessary staff for safety functions between 2028 and 2030. No new investments are imposed on the utilities. Available fuel and facility conditions support the extension.
The Ministry for Ecological Transition will study the report before deciding on the operating authorization. The original schedule foresaw closure of the first reactor in 2027 and the second in 2028.
