Over the recent weekend, Estadio Nacional in Ñuñoa hosted three concerts by Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny, drawing thousands of fans and causing disruptions in the commune. Mayor Sebastián Sichel, who took office on December 6, 2024, filed a writ of protection over street and sidewalk closures in residential areas, arguing that excessive security rings affected free movement and home access.
Since the start of his term, Sichel has repeatedly voiced concerns about events at the stadium, which impose municipal costs for cleanup, oversight, and security without corresponding revenues. In a letter to El Mercurio on June 13, 2025, he stated: “the stadium has ceased to be a sports venue and has become an events center, generating huge profits for the treasury and producers, but only negative externalities for neighbors. And million-dollar costs for the municipality.” He proposed a revenue-sharing mechanism to address this inequity.
Previous actions include over 500 fines for illegal parking during a Universidad de Chile match on May 13, 2025, totaling 587 infractions valued at $68,648 per UTM. On May 7, 2025, the municipal council approved temporary parking meters on event days to combat illegal parking. Sichel also criticized the lack of mitigation works promised for the Pan American Games and unauthorized fireworks use on August 14, 2025.
During the concerts, Puerto Rican band Chuwi served as the official opening act, performing for 62,000 people. The group, which collaborated with Bad Bunny on the song 'Weltita,' described the experience as “a loquera,” highlighting the artist's support and the shift from small shows to massive productions involving over 200 team members.
Sichel warned of the risk that Parque Estadio Nacional become a massive events space like Parque Cerrillos, failing promises of exclusive sports use. He demands urgent changes and municipal participation in the stadium's administration to balance benefits and costs.
