Nurses from private hospitals in Kannur besieged the District Labour Office on June 23 as their strike for minimum wages entered its 40th day.
The nurses, numbering over 300, have continued their action after several rounds of talks, including those with the Joint Labour Commissioner, failed to yield results. The protest at the office of District Labour Officer A.K. Jayashree was led by INA State General Secretary Muhammed Shihab and District President Sophia Abraham.
The siege ended after Ms. Jayashree assured the group that a special squad of three Assistant Labour Officers would be formed under her leadership. She also stated that inspections would take place the same day at six private hospitals involved in the strike.
The ongoing dispute centers on demands for minimum wages at private hospitals in the district.
