The Baltimore Orioles signed right-hander Lou Trivino to a major league contract on Monday, bolstering their bullpen. The team optioned rookie Trey Gibson to Triple-A Norfolk to make room on the roster. Trivino recently opted out of a minor league agreement with the Phillies.
Baltimore added veteran reliever Lou Trivino after he opted out of his minor league deal with the Phillies. The 34-year-old right-hander posted a 2.77 ERA in 10 appearances this season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. A six-year MLB veteran, Trivino has appeared in 332 career games with a 3.87 ERA, including stints with the A’s, Yankees, Giants, Dodgers and Phillies. He missed most of the 2023 and 2024 seasons following Tommy John surgery in May 2023 but has returned healthy this year. Orioles manager Craig Albernaz praised Trivino's sinker and composure. “It's a veteran presence in the 'pen,” Albernaz said. “Heavy sinker, turbo sinker, the ability to throw strikes... He was throwing the ball extremely well, the velo's there. So we're excited to have him.” The move comes as closer Ryan Helsley landed on the 15-day injured list Friday with right elbow inflammation, though he is not expected to miss significant time and faces re-evaluation later this week. Trivino joins Rico Garcia, Yennier Cano and rookie Anthony Nunez in the bullpen. Rookie Trey Gibson, Baltimore's No. 3 prospect, made his MLB debut Sunday at Yankee Stadium, allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Yankees before his option. Right-hander Albert Suárez cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Norfolk.
