Veteran tight end Robert Tonyan has joined the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, reuniting with familiar coaches and quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The 32-year-old views the move as a chance to regain his form after limited production in recent seasons.
Tonyan signed with the Steelers following a tryout at their veteran minicamp earlier this month. He previously worked with head coach Mike McCarthy and Rodgers during his time with the Green Bay Packers.
In comments to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Tonyan said the opportunity offers comfort with known players and staff. He noted the value of a quarterback who trusts him after years of shared experience.
The Steelers added Tonyan after releasing Jonnu Smith and losing Connor Heyward. They also drafted Riley Nowakowski in the fifth round, creating a mix of veterans and younger talent at the position.
Tonyan, a ninth-year player originally signed by the Packers in 2017, recorded 11 touchdown catches in 2020 but has managed only 12 receptions over the past three seasons.
