Saronic Technologies revealed plans to build its Port Alpha shipyard in the port of Brownsville, Texas, with an investment exceeding 3.2 billion dollars.
The company founded in 2022 and specialized in autonomous vessels announced the project last Wednesday in Texas. Port Alpha will be located on 835 acres with an option to expand to nearly 4,400 acres and will produce manned and autonomous ships up to 260 meters in length.
It is expected to generate up to 10,000 direct jobs and an economic impact of 160 billion dollars for Cameron County. Operations are scheduled to begin in 2028.
The announcement is part of a regional trend of investments in port and industrial infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico basin. Progreso in Yucatán is about 500 nautical miles from Brownsville and is advancing its own port expansion with phases already underway and in bidding.
