Senator Imasuen denies fugitive claims from critics

Senator Neda Imasuen has rejected allegations of fraud and criminal activity in the United States, calling them politically motivated. The lawmaker, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, insisted no warrants or indictments exist against him.

Senator Neda Imasuen (APC, Edo South) issued a detailed rebuttal on July 10 to the African Achievers Awards Organisation in London. He stated that no court or law enforcement agency had declared him a fugitive or issued an arrest warrant.

“I have never been declared a fugitive by any court or law enforcement agency in the United States or elsewhere,” Imasuen said. He noted that he travels regularly between Nigeria and the United States, owns a home in Laurelton, Queens, and receives retirement benefits there.

The senator dismissed claims linking him to a $25 million fraud or a bank robbery as false. He also rejected a circulated photograph purporting to show his arrest, saying it depicted another person. Imasuen attributed the allegations to his recent work on the Senate Ethics Committee.

Disciplinary proceedings against his legal licence in the United States were regulatory and not criminal, he said. Imasuen added that he has instructed counsel in New York to restore the licence.
