Stan Wawrinka has requested a wildcard entry for the US Open to mark the end of his career. The 41-year-old made the plea after completing his final clay-court match at the Estoril Open on July 21.
Wawrinka lost in the first round to Roman Andres Burruchaga after saving three match points. The Swiss player said he hopes the invitation will allow him to compete in New York one last time.
He noted that a wildcard would lead him to enter a Challenger event in Cancun for preparation. Wawrinka is already confirmed for the Lyon and Basel tournaments and will decide on any additional events.
The US Open has been Wawrinka’s most successful major, where he won the title in 2016 and holds a 46-16 record across 17 appearances. In his farewell season he has secured seven wins from 21 matches and needs one more victory to surpass Ivo Karlovic’s record for most ATP Tour wins after turning 40.
