Development sources indicate Quantic Dream's Star Wars Eclipse remains years away from release. Parent company NetEase hesitates to expand the team amid financial concerns tied to the studio's recent game. Spellcasters Chronicles' poor Steam performance raises doubts about further investment.
Quantic Dream announced Star Wars Eclipse over four years ago via a CGI trailer set in the High Republic era. Sources close to development told Insider Gaming the game is still years from completion. They noted that expanding the development staff could accelerate progress, but NetEase requires a clearer long-term vision before committing more funds. NetEase acquired Quantic Dream and is now reevaluating its support based on financial viability rather than creative potential alone. The studio's first free-to-play multiplayer game, Spellcasters Chronicles, launched earlier this year and serves as a test case. Available only on Steam, it peaked at 888 concurrent players and recently hit just 73 in a 24-hour period. One source warned: Should Spellcasters fail commercially, NetEase is expected to reevaluate its commitment to the studio and could opt to discontinue further investment. Meanwhile, Lucasfilm Games has turned to other partners for Star Wars titles, including Casey Hudson's Arcanaut Studios on Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, as well as upcoming Galactic Racer and an XCOM-like Zero Company later this year.
