The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) has strongly condemned the disruption of a meeting discussing the national budget at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi.
The meeting aimed to examine the effects of the 2026-27 national budget on ordinary citizens following its presentation by Finance Minister John Mbadi last week. It was attended by civil society leaders, religious figures, lawyers and other residents.
A group of people stormed the gathering and caused chaos, prompting police officers to intervene. The National Police Service said it has launched an investigation using CCTV footage to identify suspects.
SUPKEM expressed dismay at the incident and described it as a lack of respect for places of worship. Its statement said, “What is most saddening is the audacity they showed in invading with the intention of harming participants.” The council also warned that ongoing violence could lead to a situation similar to the one preceding the 2007 elections.
