Tokushima company launches bear repellent spray amid record attacks

As Japan grapples with a record number of fatal bear attacks, a small company in Tokushima Prefecture has developed a new bear repellent spray—a rare domestic product in a market dominated by imports.

Japan is facing a record number of fatal bear attacks, highlighting challenges in human-wildlife coexistence. In response, Biosiense, a veterinary pharmaceutical manufacturer based in Anan, Tokushima Prefecture, launched a bear repellent spray named Kuma Ichimokusan (Bears Running Off) in May after about three years of research and development.

The spray uses capsaicin derived from chili peppers and embodies the company's concept of “coexistence” between humans and bears, rather than mere eradication, as stated by the firm. In a market dominated by imported options, this domestic product stands out as a rare innovation.

The surge in bear attacks underscores broader issues like habitat changes and climate impacts, particularly in rural areas. Biosiense, specializing in animal health, positions the spray as a tool for animal welfare while protecting human lives, offering a practical solution amid escalating threats.
