Wang Hong and Deng Yu become first Chinese-educated Fields Medalists

Chinese mathematicians Wang Hong and Deng Yu received the 2026 Fields Medals alongside John Pardon and Jacob Tsimerman, becoming the first recipients to complete their undergraduate training in mainland China.

Wang Hong and Deng Yu, former classmates at Peking University, received the award together. This marks the first time China has produced Fields Medal winners educated on its own soil, and two at once.

China becomes the fifth country after the United States, France, Britain and Russia to produce two Fields laureates in a single ceremony, and the first Asian nation to do so.

It is also the first time two mathematicians who completed undergraduate training in mainland China have shared the prize in the same year. The medals were presented on 23 July at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia.
