Woman dies after hammer attack in Sapporo; man arrested

Police in Sapporo have arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of murder after a woman was beaten to death with a hammer in his apartment.

The incident took place at around 2 p.m. in the apartment of Yuto Okamoto, a part-time worker. Police said Okamoto struck the woman, with whom he was in a relationship, multiple times on the head and other parts of her body with a hammer.

At around 4:10 p.m., Okamoto went to a police station and said, “I killed a woman.” Officers found the woman on the floor leaning against a wall in the bedroom, bleeding from the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
