The New York Yankees recalled outfielder Jasson Domínguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, optioning pitcher Luis Gil in his place. The move comes as designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton recovers from right calf tightness sustained Friday against the Astros. Manager Aaron Boone said the team awaits MRI results on Stanton.
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Yankees added offensive firepower to their roster with the promotion of Jasson Domínguez, known as “The Martian,” while Giancarlo Stanton missed games due to calf tightness. Stanton underwent an MRI on Monday, and Boone noted the injury has been minor enough to monitor without immediate injured list placement. “I do expect us to have a decision one way or another [Monday],” Boone said. “It’s been minor enough to where we’ve kind of continued to push this. We’ll see what the doctor says about it and how he responds to that.” Stanton is hitting .256/.302/.422 with three homers and 14 RBIs in 24 games this season. He sustained the issue running the bases Friday and sat out the next two games, including Sunday's loss to the Rangers that snapped an eight-game winning streak. The Yankees sit at 18-10, leading the AL East with a league-best +47 run differential. Domínguez, 23, has thrived in Triple-A with a .326/.415/.478 slash line, five doubles, three home runs, 15 RBIs, 15 runs and eight steals over 24 games. “Down there in Triple-A, that’s what you work for, to get back to the Majors,” Domínguez said. He has a .248/.327/.397 line across 149 Major League games over three seasons. Luis Gil, who posted a 1-2 record and 6.05 ERA in four starts with velocity and command issues, was sent down. The Yankees face right-handers this series, but Domínguez excels against lefties in Triple-A, going 7-for-18 with three doubles and a homer.
