5.7 magnitude quake recorded east of Base Frei

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Saturday afternoon in the Chilean Antarctic Territory. The National Seismological Center placed the epicenter 443 kilometers east of Base Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva at a depth of 30 kilometers.

The quake struck at 15:50 hours on Saturday, July 18. The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy assessed the event and determined it did not meet the conditions to generate a tsunami along Chile's coasts.

SENAPRED had initially reported a magnitude of 5.6 and a distance of 458 kilometers east of the base. The National Seismological Center updated the final data.

No damage or affected people have been reported so far from the quake. The event is part of the usual seismic activity in the area due to the interaction of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates.
