Africa urged to invest more in agricultural innovation

A call was made at the Harvesting the Future Africa Summit held in Nairobi in June 2026 for Africa to invest more in agricultural innovation and use proven technologies to boost food production.

The summit was organized by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and its partners. Leaders stressed the need to scale proven technologies to farmers to address drought, high production costs and climate change impacts.

CIMMYT Director General Bram Govaerts said successful technologies should reach many farmers and faster. Board member Dr Agnes Kalibata emphasized the need for adequate resources to demonstrate how science can increase production.

A report released in May 2026 by Financial Sector Deepening Kenya showed Kenya faces major shortfalls in eggs, milk, fish and honey each year while spending between Sh288 billion and Sh500 billion on food imports.
