COMESA promotes AI use to transform agriculture in Africa

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) is advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to help farmers boost production and cope with climate change.

COMESA Communications Officer Leonard Chitunda said during training in Nairobi that AI gives farmers timely weather, soil health and market information via mobile phones.

COMESA is implementing the World Bank-funded Inclusive Digitalisation for Eastern and Southern Africa programme worth $2.5 billion, of which $10 million is allocated for joint AI policies.

Director of ICT at Kenya’s Department of Government Business Timothy Were stressed the need for harmonised laws across COMESA countries to ensure digital system security.
