Alex Eala falls to Muchova in Miami Open round of 16

Alex Eala's Miami Open run ended with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to world No. 14 Karolina Muchova in the round of 16 at Hard Rock Stadium on March 23. This marks her 13th defeat against Czech players since turning professional in 2020. The result prevented her from matching her 2025 semifinal appearance.

At the Hard Rock Stadium's Grandstand, Muchova dispatched Eala in just one hour. The Czech dominated the first set, winning it in 22 minutes while allowing the 20-year-old Filipina only six points. Muchova took the first four games of the second set, nearly handing Eala a double bagel before the latter won two of the next three. However, Muchova held in the eighth game and sealed the win with her 20th winner, reaching the Miami quarterfinals for the first time in her career. “It felt pretty good. You get nervous here and there when it’s going, I don’t want to say easy, but when the score is in your favor, it’s like you have to be cautious. A little bit nervous but obviously, I’m super happy to be here in the quarters. It’s incredible,” Muchova said. Eala committed 32 errors (13 unforced and 19 forced) against just seven winners. This was her third loss to a Czech player this year, after defeats to Tereza Valentova in Qatar Open's round of 64 and Linda Noskova in Indian Wells' round of 16. Since turning pro in 2020, other Czech opponents include Marketa Vondrousova, Barbora Krejcikova, Linda Fruhvirtova, Marie Bouzkova, Katerina Siniakova, Tereza Martincova, Gabriela Knutson, and Anastasia Zarycka, leaving her 0-13 record against them. Though at a career-high No. 29, Eala has dropped to No. 45 in live rankings. Her run was solid: as 31st seed with a first-round bye, she beat Germany's Laura Siegemund in round of 64 and Poland's Magda Linette in round of 32. This marks her third straight WTA 1000 fourth-round appearance after Dubai and Indian Wells.
