Angat dam water level dips below minimum operating level

The National Water Resources Board is considering cloud-seeding operations over the Angat Watershed as water levels at the dam drop below the minimum operating level. The dam serves as Metro Manila’s main source of potable water. As of Friday, its water elevation reached 178.55 meters.

The National Water Resources Board is discussing the possibility of cloud-seeding with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration. NWRB executive director Sevillo David Jr. confirmed the talks in a text message to the Philippine News Agency.

Records from Bulacan’s Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office show the dam’s water elevation has receded to 178.55 meters. This figure sits 1.45 meters below the minimum operating level of 180 meters.

David noted that an expected El Niño weather phenomenon could further reduce water levels in the coming period. The board aims to replenish supplies through the proposed operations over the Angat Watershed.
