ArenaNet releases Guild Wars 3 narrative blog post

ArenaNet has published a new blog post that outlines key story elements for its upcoming MMORPG Guild Wars 3. The post focuses on the Vaelwardens and their role in the game's timeline.

The blog post titled The Vaelwardens of the Orrian Golden Age places the game during a period when the Elder Dragons are in deep slumber and magic flows freely through the world. It describes the founding of the Vaelwardens in Orr after the arrival of the Human Gods.

These Vaelwardens receive special signets that let them protect magical spirits and use magic which is otherwise unavailable to mortals. The post also introduces rival groups such as the industrialist Mavenwrights who arrive in Orr to exploit the enchanted lands.

Players on Reddit have speculated that signets combined with spirit bonding could form the basis of the game's magic system similar to existing mastery mechanics. The narrative themes of protecting nature echo those in the upcoming title Soulframe.
