Authorities seize ₱3.56 billion in smuggled cigarettes in Cebu and Manila

Authorities said the ₱3.56 billion worth of alleged smuggled cigarettes seized in Cebu and Manila may have originated from Taiwan or mainland China before being transferred at sea and disguised as a domestic shipment.

National authorities seized or discovered 59 container vans in separate operations in Cebu and Manila. The haul, with an estimated market value of ₱3.56 billion, is one of the largest illicit cigarette shipments uncovered in recent years.

BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said initial findings indicate the shipment may have come from Taiwan or mainland China. It was transferred to a smaller vessel at sea and declared as a domestic shipment to bypass international port inspections.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag said everyone involved would be held accountable. The investigation continues to identify all individuals and entities and to file appropriate charges under laws including the Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act of 2024.
