Biden declines to appeal ruling releasing ghostwriter tapes

Former President Joe Biden will not appeal a court decision that clears the way for the Justice Department to release recordings of his 2017 interviews with a ghostwriter.

Biden's lawyers filed a notice of voluntary dismissal on Friday, ending his legal challenge. The move allows the Trump Justice Department to turn over transcripts and audio recordings to the Heritage Foundation, which sued for access.

The tapes were made after Biden left the vice presidency and cover discussions for his memoir Promise Me, Dad. They were collected during a 2022 investigation into classified documents found at his home.

A special prosecutor in 2024 found no basis for charges but described the sessions as slow and marked by memory struggles. Conservative groups have said they will release the full materials online once received.

Lower courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, rejected Biden's privacy arguments. The Justice Department had opposed disclosure for nearly two years before reversing course in May.
