This Friday afternoon, authorities responded to the discovery of a body in an advanced state of decomposition on the Mapocho riverbank in Renca. The remains belong to a man possibly of foreign origin, and the cause of death is under investigation. The PDI's Homicide Brigade will conduct the necessary examinations.
The discovery took place in the Renca commune, in the Metropolitan Region, when guards from the Metropolitan Park alerted Carabineros to the presence of the body in the Mapocho riverbed. The Prosecutor's Office's Organized Crime and Homicide Team (ECOH), led by prosecutor Esteban Silva, was promptly mobilized, coordinating the involvement of the Investigative Police's (PDI) Homicide Brigade.
Prosecutor Silva stated that "this afternoon we received a report of the discovery of a male subject's body. Everything indicates it is of foreign origin, seen by people in the Mapocho riverbed." He added that "the body is in an advanced state of putrefaction, so we have very preliminary information, and laboratory studies will be necessary to determine the cause of death."
Initially, reports mentioned a possible gunshot to the head, but the prosecutor did not confirm this, stressing that forensic analyses will be crucial to clarify the circumstances. Such findings in urban areas like the Mapocho often require meticulous work to preserve evidence, given the river environment and the time elapsed since death. Authorities have secured the site as investigations proceed.
