Leon Ngcikwe, a Build One South Africa ward candidate, was shot dead in Gugulethu on Saturday evening. A 21-year-old passenger was injured in the attack. The incident has prompted concerns over political violence ahead of elections later this year.
Leon Ngcikwe was one of several political candidates killed in Cape Town over the weekend. He served as a Build One South Africa ward candidate in Gugulethu and was also active in the local neighbourhood watch. His mother, Joyce Ngcikwe, said he was hands-on in the family and community.
A 21-year-old passenger was injured during the shooting and remains in hospital. BOSA Deputy President Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster described Ngcikwe as dedicated to serving his community and noted the loss felt by both the party and residents.
In a separate incident in Dunoon, Sinovuyo Dyokwe was also gunned down on Saturday evening. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia expressed concern about the risk of further killings in the run-up to the elections. The Western Cape Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the cases.
